Origin and history
The Beaumarchais bakery and pastry shop, located at 28 boulevard Beaumarchais in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, is a remarkable example of early 20th century commercial architecture. Developed around 1900 by the Benoist and Fils workshop, it is characterized by facades decorated with vertical ceramic panels representing wild flowers (hulls, daisies, thistles) and wheat ears. These 10 cm side painted tiles, decorated with blue ribbons and floral friezes, create a unique plant harmony. Inside, glass-painted canvases complete this Art Nouveau decor, restored in 1988 to preserve its authenticity.
The front and interior decoration of the bakery were listed as historic monuments on May 23, 1984, recognizing their heritage value. This classification underlines the importance of this place as a witness to the craftsmanship and commercial aesthetics of the time. In 2010, the establishment received the trophy of the best cake of the kings with almonds of Paris, confirming its excellence both heritage and gastronomic. Served by metro stations Bastille, Chemin Vert and Bréguet-Sabin, the bakery remains an emblematic place in the neighborhood, combining history and culinary tradition.
Ceramic panels, organized in symmetrical patterns, evoke nature and abundance, themes dear to Art Nouveau. The plinth, decorated with pink thistles, and the bouquets hanging in the upper part of the facades, reinforce this impression of freshness and creativity. The choice of flowers in the fields, rather than more noble patterns, reflects a desire to democratize art and integrate it into everyday life. This artistic bias, coupled with the quality of materials, makes this bakery a model of its kind, still in operation today.
The Benoist and Son workshop, the project's masterpiece, is representative of the artisans who marked Parisian architecture at the turn of the century. Their work, combining technical know-how and aesthetic sensitivity, has helped shape the visual identity of Parisian businesses. The 1988 restoration, in accordance with the original techniques, allowed this heritage to be passed on to subsequent generations. Today, the Beaumarchais bakery-pastry embodies both an artistic heritage and a living tradition, perpetuating the excellence of French pastry in a historical setting.
