Origin and history
Beaumefort Castle, located in the commune of Saint-Alban-Auriolles in Ardèche, consists of a medieval dungeon and an 18th century residence. Its square heart, probably built in the 13th century, retains defensive elements on each floor, while the buildings revolve around an irregular courtyard open to a natural cave. The adjacent limestone hill, exploited as a quarry, served as support for fortifications.
In 1752 the castle was transformed into a residence and underwent a major development campaign. The facades, roofs, and a living room decorated with muffled canvases – a rare decor – date back to this period. Together, including the dungeon, the courtyard with its cave, an orangery, and a small southern building, has been listed as historical monuments since 2 June 2009. Parcel A 1368, on which it stands, is also protected.
The spatial organization of the castle reflects its dual use: military with the dungeon equipped with defensive elements, and residential with decorated spaces. The cave built into the courtyard, as well as the remains of the quarry, testify to the adaptation of the site to its geological environment. The painted canvases of the living room, preserved in situ, are a notable example of 18th-century decorative art in Ardèche.
