Origin and history
Merck-Saint-Liévin Cemetery is a historic monument located in the department of Pas-de-Calais, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its portal, which was registered by ministerial decree on 2 December 1946. This gate, a protected element, bears witness to the funeral architecture of this period and the importance attached to sacred spaces in rural communities.
The cemetery is located at the approximate address of 18 Rue de l'Église, in the village of Merck-Saint-Liévin. Although the accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note of 6/10), it remains an emblematic place of the municipality, managed by the latter. The Merimée database and Monumentum data confirm its status as communal property, without further details on its current use (visits, events).
In the 18th century, cemeteries in rural areas such as Merck-Saint-Liévin played a central role in community life. They were often located around churches, reflecting the social and religious organization of the time. These spaces served not only as a burial place, but also as a gathering for ceremonies and commemorations, strengthening the links between the inhabitants and their local heritage.
