Cemetery Cross, neighbouring Saint Martin's Church (Box B 114): inscription by decree of 21 December 1987

Origin and history

The cemetery cross of the Pout, classified as Historic Monument, dates from the 16th century and is distinguished by its rough sculptures, typical of popular art. It represents a Christ and a Virgin to the Child, testimonies of local devotion and craftsmanship of the time. Its location, close to the Saint Martin church, highlights its central role in the religious and community life of the village.

Listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 21 December 1987, this cross belongs today to the commune of Pout (Gironde). Its exact location, 2 Place de la Mairie, reflects its anchoring in the historic heart of the village. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its heritage importance, although the accuracy of its geographical location is considered poor (level 5/10).

The 16th century cemetery crosses, like the Pout, often served as a spiritual and social landmark for rural populations. They marked the entrance to the sacred places and recalled the divine presence in daily life. Their iconography, though simple, was intended to educate and inspire the faithful, in a context where the Catholic Church largely structured collective life. This monument thus illustrates both the regional artistic heritage and the religious practices of the modern era.
