Léo Drouyn - Historical and descriptive Documented the cross in the 19th century.

Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Sadirac is a hosanary cross, type of religious monument that appeared from the 15th century. These crosses, often placed in the centre of the cemeteries, served especially during the blessing of the branches, where they sang the Hosanna prayer. They were usually erected thanks to gifts from local lords and highlighted the patron saint of the parish, often represented on the sommital cross. Unlike carved works, they were often made by master masons.

The cross of Sadirac, described by Léo Drouyn, is distinguished by its square barrel adorned with pilasters, hooks and doucin arches. An empty niche, surmounted by a subquinquilobate accolade, opens to the west, while the base, both square and octagonal, supports a stone console. With a total height of 4.70 meters, it rests on a walk and is surmounted by a cross dominated by pinacles. Its architectural style reflects the local practices of the period, combining structural simplicity and religious symbolism.

Classified as historical monuments since December 20, 1907, this cross bears witness to the importance of funeral monuments in medieval parish life. Its location near Saint Martin's Church in Sadirac, Gironde, highlights its central role in religious and community rituals. The Holy Crosses, like this one, also marked the sacred space of the cemetery, a place of memory and prayer for the faithful.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its origin in the sixties and its status as communal property. Although some architectural details (such as the empty niche) left open questions, its ranking in 1907 guaranteed its preservation as a local historical heritage. The approximate location, near the road to Creon, allows to situate it in the current landscape of Sadirac.
