Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Sainte-Austreberthe is an emblematic monument located in the cemetery of the village of the same name, in Normandy. Dated from the 16th century (or possibly from the 15th according to certain sources), this stone cross is distinguished by its octagonal barrel adorned with bas-reliefs representing the evangelists and scenes of Christ's life. His artistic style and design reflect the local Renaissance sculptural traditions.

Ranked a historical monument by decree of 21 March 1910, this cross illustrates the importance of religious symbols in public space at that time. Cemetery crosses, often erected near churches or in funeral enclosures, served both as a spiritual landmark for the faithful and as an identity marker for rural communities. Their preservation is evidence of people's attachment to their local heritage.

La croix is today the property of the commune of Sainte-Austreberthe, in the Seine-Maritime department. Its classification among historical monuments highlights its heritage value, both artistically and historically. Available sources, such as the Heritage of the Communes of Seine-Maritime (1997) or the Merimée base, confirm its status as a remarkable element of Norman heritage.
