Cemetery Cross (Box ZJ 94): Order of 1 April 1966
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Limetz-Villez, located in the Yvelines department in Île-de-France, is an emblematic monument dating from the late 16th century. It was listed as a historic monument on April 1, 1966, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. This cross consists of a cylindrical barrel topped by a Greek cross in relief, soberly decorated, reflecting the sober and sleek style of the era.
On one side of the cross is carved a Virgin to the Child, a central symbol of Christian devotion, while the other side has an angelic head, adding a celestial dimension to the work. These artistic representations, although little decorated, testify to the religious and cultural importance of the cemetery crosses in the rural communities of the time. These monuments served not only as funeral markers, but also as gathering points and prayer points for the inhabitants.
The precise location of the cross is indicated as the 1 Way of Careers in Limetz-Villez, and it is owned by the municipality. Its conservation status and approximate location were assessed as satisfactory, allowing visitors and researchers to access this historic heritage. The cross thus illustrates the link between Christian architecture, funeral art and community life in Île-de-France during the Renaissance.
