Origin and history
The funeral fanal of Saint-Goussaud, also known as the lantern of the dead, is a local granite building erected in the 15th century. It comes in the form of a 5.5-metre-high square tower, with an openwork pavilion and a pyramid, topped by a metal cross. The west side has an altar table and an opening to light or turn off the inner lamp. Originally, this monument was located in the old cemetery adjacent to the village church.
The cross that crowns the fanal could date from the thirteenth century, before the construction of the lantern itself. The whole thing was moved after the cemetery was decommissioned. Ranked a historic monument by decree of December 7, 1914, it now belongs to the commune of Saint-Goussaud. Its typical architecture of the lanterns of the dead makes it a rare testimony of medieval funeral practices in Limousin.
Built in locally extracted granite, this lantern illustrates an architectural tradition linked to the commemoration of the deceased. The openings of the pavilion allowed the light of the lamp to shine at night, symbolizing a spiritual presence or guiding souls. Although its exact use remains debated (perpetual fire, signage, or ritual), its initial implantation in the cemetery underscores its role in the funeral beliefs and rites of the time.
