Facade on street and corresponding roof (cad. AR 162): inscription by decree of 16 July 1984

Origin and history

The Notre-Dame Beguinage is an emblematic religious building in Cambrai, northern department. This site is part of the tradition of beguinages, architectural ensembles intended to welcome communities of beguines, secular women leading a pious life without pronouncement of monastic vows. These places played a major social and spiritual role in medieval and modern cities, providing a framework for community life while allowing for some autonomy.

The Beguinage Notre-Dame de Cambrai was listed as historic monuments on July 16, 1984, recognizing its heritage value. This protection specifically concerns the street façade and the corresponding roof, as indicated in the archives of the Merimée base. Located at 27 rue des Capucins, this monument bears witness to the religious and urban history of Cambrai, in an area marked by a strong presence of religious communities and architectures dedicated to devotion.
