Origin and history
The belfry of Grane is a historic monument located in the Drôme department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 14th century, it embodies medieval civil architecture typical of this period. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 13 July 1926 bears witness to its recognized heritage value.
This type of construction, common in medieval towns and villages, often served as both a watchtower, a symbol of communal power and a gathering place. In Grane, as elsewhere in Rhône-Alpes, belfries played a central role in social organisation and local defence. Their presence reflected the growing importance of the villages in front of feudal lords during the lower Middle Ages.
Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives indicate that the belfry is now owned by the municipality. Its exact address, 1 Rue du Fossé, and its Insee code (26144) confirm its anchoring in the territory of Grane. The GPS location, although considered mediocre (note of 5/10), allows it to be located in the historic centre of the village.
