Origin and history

The belfry of Douai, built between 1380 and 1410 on the site of a wooden tower, was designed as a gothic watchtower. Its construction used the stones of the castle of Cantin, sold in 1379 by Jacques de Halluyn and his son Jean. An adjacent building and a chapel were added on the west and south sides. The arrow, destroyed by a fire in 1475, was rebuilt that same year, while a carillon, installed in 1391, rhythmized local life.

In the 19th century, the belfry underwent important restorations: a symmetrical building was added to balance the town hall, and the sandstone structure was reinforced by bricks. The 15th century buildings were redesigned according to the tastes of the era. The carillon, originally composed of bells recast in 1730 by Nicolas Levache, was decimated in 1917 by the German occupant. Replaced in 1924, then enriched in 1953-1954 by 47 Paccard bells, it now has 62 bells after a last addition in 1974.

Ranked as a historic monument in 1862, the belfry inspired Victor Hugo in 1837, who described him as a "beautiful Gothic belfry" animated by a "happy" carillon. His drawing, preserved at the Musée de la Place des Vosges in Paris, bears witness to this admiration. The monument remains a municipal symbol, mixing civic functions (fest hall, weekly concerts) and sound heritage, with melodies playing every quarter hour.

The belfry is also famous for its role in customs life, marked by events such as the fire of Meschief (float) or post-war restorations. Two historic bells, "Happy" (1471, 5,500 kg) and "La disnéee" (1471, 2,400 kg), damaged in 1917 but restored, now stand alongside modern bells. The site, owned by the commune, attracts for its architecture and carillon, one of the richest in France.

Finally, the belfry was immortalized by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot in a painting, stressing its cultural importance. Today, it embodies both the medieval history of Douai, the transformations of the 19th and 20th centuries, and a perennial carillonistic tradition, with concerts every Saturday out of school.
