Key figures

Vollet - Architect Reconstructs the campanile (1838-1842).

Origin and history

The belfry of Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule is an ancient tower of the Benedictine monastic enclosure, dated the thirteenth century by its preserved archeries. The tower, which was certified as early as 1456, served as a watchtower for the inhabitants, with a clock installed around 1480 (mentioned in 1487). Its defensive and civic role reflects the medieval organization of the city, where religious buildings also played a role of collective protection.

During the Revolution or the Empire, the clock was moved into the bell tower of the former priorial church, which became parish. In 1838 the municipality decided to restore the original function of the belfry. The architect Vollet then led the reconstruction of the campanile between 1838 and 1842, marking the transition to its present use. Joined the Historical Monuments in 1986, the belfry symbolizes today the architectural heritage and urban history of Saint Pourçain.

The tower, a communal property, preserves medieval elements such as archeries, while the 19th century campanile illustrates post-revolutionary restorations. Its registration in 1986 (decree of 1 July) protects a military, religious and civic building, a witness to the evolution of the city since the Middle Ages.
