Origin and history

The cross of Belmont-sur-Vair is a monumental cross erected in the village of Belmont-sur-Vair in the Vosges department. Dating from the first half of the sixteenth century, it is distinguished by its central location, opposite the town hall, on the street of the Way. This type of monument, typical of rural religious architecture, often served as a spiritual and social landmark for the inhabitants.

Classified as a historical monument by decree of 27 September 1932, this cross illustrates the importance attached to preserving the local heritage. The monumental crosses of this period were generally associated with religious practices, commemorations or territorial boundaries. Their presence in the villages also reflected the community organization around shared symbols.

Today, the Belmont-sur-Vair cross remains a significant part of the urban landscape, recalling the history and traditions of the region. Its classification as a historic monument underscores its heritage value and its role in the collective memory of the Great East.
