Covered well: registration by order of 23 May 1928

Origin and history

The covered well of Vinzelles is an emblematic building located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 16th century, it bears witness to the utilitarian and community architecture of that time, where the water points played a central role in the daily life of the villages.

The well was listed as historic monuments on 23 May 1928, recognizing its heritage value. It is precisely rue de l'Eglise, in the heart of the village of Vinzelles, and remains a rare example of covered wells preserved in this area. Its inclusion in the Mérimée base confirms its importance in the local heritage.

In the 16th century, covered wells were often built to protect water quality and facilitate access, especially in rural areas such as Burgundy. These structures also reflected the collective organisation around essential resources, where water management was a major concern for peasant communities and local lords.
