Origin and history

The well of 1584, today condemned, is a historical monument located in Colmar, in the department of Upper Rhine. It is located in Dominican Square, behind the choir of the ancient Dominican church. This Renaissance well, dated 1584, is adorned with a carved bicephalic eagle, appearing in a shield. An inscription indicates that it was rehabilitated in 1904, although the monument currently visible was a copy installed in 1988.

The well has been listed as historic monuments since 28 June 1937. It belongs to the town of Colmar and is protected for its heritage interest. The dates engraved on both sides of the well recall its origin and history, although the precise details of its construction or sponsors are not mentioned in the available sources.

The Dominican Square, where the well is located, is an emblematic place of Colmar, marked by the religious and architectural history of the city. The bicephalic eagle, a symbol often associated with the Holy Roman Empire, highlights the political and cultural influence of the region during the Renaissance era. This well bears witness to the Alsatian heritage and its historical heritage.
