Origin and history

The castle of Béru, located in the department of Yonne in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a 17th century building rebuilt after a fire in 1646. It is distinguished by its architectural organisation around a large square courtyard, framed by main buildings and commons. On the upper floor, two sun and lunar dials, accompanied by Latin inscriptions, are rare and notable elements. The roofs, adorned with openwork stone skylights representing bicephalous eagles, add to its exceptional character.

The estate also includes a medieval house, probably intended for the guards, as well as remains of towers and a bastion. The alignments of plantations, still visible, follow a drawing dated 1728, testifying to the landscaping of the period. The castle, its commons, and various elements such as the dovecote or the terrace were listed as historic monuments in 2001, highlighting their heritage value.

The ensemble, closed by a gate and gate, reflects an orderly and functional architecture, typical of the seigneurial residences of the period. The fence walls, the well, and the bastioned remains complete this painting, offering an overview of the defensive and domestic organization of the seventeenth century in Burgundy.
