Colombia: registration by decree of 19 January 1927
Origin and history
Besneray Castle is a building located in the commune of La Chapelle-Yvon in the Calvados department of Normandy. Its dovecote, dating back to the 17th century, is the most remarkable element of the site. He was listed as a Historic Monument on January 19, 1927, thus highlighting his heritage and architectural importance.
The location of the castle is specified about 2 km east of the village of La Chapelle-Yvon. Available contact information indicates an approximate address in Valorbiquet, although the official address recorded in the Merimée database is associated with La Chapelle-Yvon. This geographical duality sometimes reflects administrative developments or local peculiarities of rural communities.
In the 17th century, Normandy was a region marked by prosperous agriculture and an influential land nobility. The dovecotes, like that of Besneray Castle, were symbols of prestige and seigneurial power. They served not only for the breeding of pigeons, a source of meat and fertilizer, but also to affirm the social status of their owners in a society still very hierarchical.
The registration of the dovecote in 1927 demonstrated the early recognition of the heritage value of this type of construction. At that time, the protection of historical monuments in France developed, with particular attention to rural buildings and architectural elements characteristic of ancient times.
Today, Besneray Castle and its dovecote illustrate the architectural heritage of 17th century Normandy. Their preservation allows us to understand the lifestyles, construction techniques and social relationships of this time, while offering a material testimony of local and regional history.
