Origin and history

The Betbeder-Baïta House is an emblematic 17th century house located in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, on the quay of l'Infante, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. With its two floors and architecture reminiscent of the Italian palazzi, it is distinguished by a main entrance surmounted by a pediment and a ground floor decorated with four oculi. Close to the house of the Infante, it illustrates the architectural fascist linked to the port boom of the city at that time.

This house has preserved all its facade works as well as many original interior elements, making it a rare testimony of the 17th century Basque civil architecture. It was fully listed as historic monuments by order of 17 March 1994, thereby recognizing its exceptional heritage value. Its location on the port highlights its historical link with the maritime and commercial activities that animated Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

The Betbeder-Baita house is part of a remarkable architectural complex around the port, reflecting the economic prosperity of the region in the seventeenth century. Its style, combining local and European influences, bears witness to the cultural and artistic exchanges of the time. Today, it remains a symbol of Basque heritage, accessible from the quay of the Infante, in the heart of the historic city.
