Origin and history

The chapel of the Blue Penitents, originally named Chapel of the Cordeliers, was built between the 14th and 15th centuries in Béziers. Its flamboyant Gothic porch, rare in Languedoc, bears witness to its architectural importance. Originally located outside the ramparts, it was rebuilt inside the city after successive destructions, notably during the invasion of the Black Prince in 1355 and an episode of civil war in 1420-1421. The convent of the Cordeliers, probably established in the thirteenth century, was ceded to the Recollets in 1608 before being sold as a national good at the Revolution.

In the 19th century, the chapel lost its choir and several spans during the destruction of the ramparts to which it was backed. It served as a meeting place for the drafting of the complaint book of the three Orders (Clergy, Noblesse, Third State) before being entrusted to the brotherhood of the Blue Penitents. In 1839 the priest of the Madeleine bought the remaining part of the church, including the flamboyant porch and the bell tower, and restored it to worship. The bedside murals, dating from the first quarter of the 19th century, were classified in 1982, while the chapel was listed as historical monuments in 1973.

The architecture of the chapel is distinguished by its southern entrance, consisting of two doors geminied under low arches, adorned with niches today empty. A four-leaf rosette and an articulated slant tower complete this set. The western facade, with its rosacea and polylobes, as well as the octagonal staircase turret, reflect late Gothic influences. The chapel, owned by the commune, remains a major testimony of Béziers' religious and architectural history, mixing medieval heritage and revolutionary transformations.
