Origin and history
The Poudrey gulf is an exceptional natural site located near Etalans, in the Doubs department, in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Ranked among Europe's ten largest gulfs by volume, it is distinguished by its main hall of nearly a million cubic meters, its stalactites, stalagmites and a small underground lake. A sound and light show is offered to visitors, making the visit immersive and secure thanks to suitable facilities.
The abyss was formed by the erosion of surface water dissolving the limestones of the upper Sequanian. Its ceiling, consisting of a slab of almost horizontal white limestone, contrasts with its congested bottom of rubble resting on marnes and marno-calcaria. This geological phenomenon illustrates the natural processes of karst cavity formation.
Ranked among the protected natural sites of the Doubs since 1932, the Poudrey gulf is managed by the DREAL of Franche-Comté. This classification underlines its heritage and ecological importance, while allowing its tourist exploitation. The site attracts visitors for its spectacular character and speleological interest, while serving as a witness to the underground landscapes of the Jura Massif.
