Origin and history

The portal of the convent of Blon, dated 1682, was originally an element of the Benedictine convent of Vire. He was dismantled in 1822 and resettled in front of the former Ursulines convent, transformed into a Saint-Louis hospice. This displacement reflects the post-revolutionary upheavals affecting religious property in Normandy.

In 1847, the portal was again dismantled and acquired in 1853 by the sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. They moved to its current location, in the place called Les Monts de Vaudry, in Vire Normandie. This granite monument illustrates the Norman religious architecture of the seventeenth century, marked by the sobriety and robustness of local materials.

Ranked a historic monument since September 22, 1986, the portal bears witness to the turbulent history of religious buildings in Calvados. Its listing in the inventory highlights its heritage value, linked to both its aesthetics and its historical journey, marked by successive dismantlings and relocations.

The current site, managed by an association, perpetuates the memory of the Benedictine and Ursuline communities that marked Vire Normandie. The portal, the only visible vestige of the convent of Blon, offers an overview of the spiritual and architectural heritage of the region, between preservation and contemporary adaptations.
