Origin and history

The route terminal of Saint-Yan is a road terminal of the old regime, located in the town hall, at the crossroads of the departmental roads D 982 and D 352. It indicated the junction between several major axes: Route No. 16 linking Champagne with Lyonnais and Forez (via Semur, Saulieu, Autun, Digoin and Marcigny), and Route No. 38 leading to Mâcon by Charolles. It also reported the directions of Dijon, Moulins, Decize and Bourbon-Lancy, with the corresponding distances. Its readability is reinforced by a black painting highlighting the inscriptions.

Ranked a historic monument since 13 March 1950, this pillar illustrates the organization of road networks at the beginning of the 19th century. At the time, these landmarks played a key role for travellers, merchants and administrations, facilitating travel in a context where detailed maps remained scarce. Its location in front of the town hall of Saint-Yan, combined with its heritage protection, makes it a tangible testimony to the history of transport in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
