Origin and history

The butcher shop located at 2 rue Perdonnet and 24 rue Cail, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, is an architectural and commercial testimony of the second half of the 19th century. This monument, though modest in its function, illustrates the evolution of Parisian fronts at a time when industrialisation transformed urban habits. Its listing in the Inventory of Historic Monuments in 1984 highlights the heritage value of its external elements, reflecting the craftsmanship and construction techniques of the period.

The location of this butcher shop, at the corner of two streets of the 10th arrondissement, is located in a district marked by an increasing social and economic mix in the 19th century. At this time, Paris experienced a major demographic and urban expansion, with the development of central halls and local shops. Butchers, like the one on Rue Perdonnet, played a key role in the daily feeding of Parisians, while embodying architectural changes related to thehaussmannisation. Their front, often designed, also served as a showcase for local know-how.

Classified for its front by order of 23 May 1984, this butcher shop is one of the few preserved examples of traditional Parisian shops. The criteria of protection highlight elements characteristic of the signs and carpentry of the time, now disappeared or deeply transformed. The accuracy of its location, assessed as "passible" (note 5/10), recalls the challenges of preserving the vernacular heritage in a constantly changing urban fabric.
