Origin and history
The Bourloire du Cercle Saint-Paul à Toufflers is a historic monument built during the 2nd quarter of the 20th century, specifically in 1931. It is part of a set including a party hall, built on the initiative of a family of industrialists. This place, combined with a patronage, reflects the social and religious commitment of the time, with an official inauguration presided over by the Bishop of Lille. The bourloire is located at the back of the courtyard, in a space probably designed for community and educational activities.
The building has now been listed in the Historic Monuments since 19 April 2006, with full protection covering the kettle (cadastre AM 343). Owned by an association, its current use is not specified in the sources, but its history remains linked to the industrial and Catholic heritage of Nord-Pas-de-Calais. The location, at 35 rue Henri-Pouchain in Toufflers, is attested, although the cartographic accuracy is considered a priori satisfactory (note 6/10).
This type of monument illustrates the role of patronage in the first half of the twentieth century, often supported by wealthy families or religious institutions. These structures provided spaces for leisure, education and sociability for young people, in a context marked by industrialization and the influence of the Catholic Church. The Toufflers bourloire, with its dedicated festive hall, is part of this tradition, combining charitable commitment and local anchoring.
