Origin and history

La Croix de Cemetery de Bouverans is a monumental cross erected in the 16th century, located in the heart of the village of Bouverans, in the Doubs department (region Burgundy-Franche-Comté). It is in the immediate vicinity of the Church of the Assumption, marking a central place in religious and community life. Its pedestal and pillar, of troubadour style, reflect a revisited medieval aesthetic, typical of 19th century restorations.

The cross was restored in the 19th century, as evidenced by its architectural style and an inscription engraved on the pedestal: "Mission Cross 26 9bre 1854 indulgence of 300 days". This mention suggests its role in local devotional practices, including religious missions that rhythmized the spiritual life of villages in the mid-19th century. The monument has been protected as historic monuments since November 22, 1993, recognizing its heritage value.

Owned by the commune of Bouverans, the cross is listed in the general inventory of cultural heritage under the reference "Cemeter Cross (Box ZN 69)". Its precise location at 4 Grande Rue and its conservation status have been documented by sources such as the Merimée and Monumentum base. Although its GPS location is considered "passable" (level 5/10), it remains a visible landmark of the franc-comtois religious heritage, linked to the history of Christian architecture and local traditions.
