Menhir de Briangault (Box YC 44): Order of 20 October 1983

Origin and history

The Menhir de Briangault is a megalithic monument erected during the Neolithic period, marked by the emergence of agriculture and livestock in Europe. This type of structure, typical of prehistoric societies, probably served as a territorial landmark, place of worship or funeral marker. Menhirs, often isolated or aligned, testify to the first complex social organizations and spiritual beliefs of these sedentary communities.

Located in the municipality of Sion-les-Mines, in the Loire-Atlantique department ( Pays de la Loire region), this menhir has been officially recognized for its heritage value. Ranked as historical monuments by order of 20 October 1983, it is one of the protected archaeological remains of the region. Its exact location, referenced in the Mérimée base under the YC 44 cadastral code, makes it a key element of the local megalithic heritage, alongside other comparable sites in Brittany and in the West of France.
