NARJOUX - Architect Designer of the fountain in 1829.

Origin and history

The fountain of Place de la Halle, located in Givry en Saône-et-Loire, is an emblematic monument of the municipality. Built during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, it embodies the utilitarian and decorative architecture of this period, marked by an increase in urban development aimed at improving the quality of life of the inhabitants. Its designation as historic monuments, effective since 10 June 1932, reflects its heritage value and its importance in the local landscape.

The fountain, dated precisely from 1829, was designed by architect NARJOUX, whose name remains associated with this project. Today it is owned by the municipality of Givry and continues to mark the city centre, on Place de la Halle. Its location, as well as its legal protection, make it a key element of the architectural heritage of Saône-et-Loire, reflecting the hygienist and aesthetic concerns of the early 19th century.

In the historical context of Burgundy in the 19th century, public fountains played a central role in everyday life. They served not only as a water supply for the inhabitants, but also as a place of sociability and exchange. The construction of such infrastructure was part of a broader dynamic of urban beautification and modernization of urban facilities, often driven by municipalities or local architects such as NARJOUX.
