Bread oven of the former forest habitat of the Five Barracks (Box AC 39): inscription by order of 20 November 1986

Origin and history

The bread oven of the former habitat in the forest of the barracks of the Five is a monument located in the commune of Our, in the department of Jura (39). This oven, built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, bears witness to human occupation related to logging or isolated rural activities. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by decree of 20 November 1986 underlines its heritage importance, although its exact location remains approximate (accuracy noted 5/10 in the sources).

At that time, in the Jura forest areas, collective or family bread ovens played a central role in everyday life. They served not only for the cooking of bread, a basic food, but also as a gathering place for inhabitants of hamlets or scattered farms. These structures reflect a social organization where resources, such as timber and arable land, were shared or jointly managed.

Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée archives indicate that this furnace is the only protected element among the remains of the old habitat of the Five-story lodges. Its present state and accessibility are not specified, but its inscription suggests a desire to preserve this testimony of the rural lifestyles of the past. The region of Franche-Comté, to which Jura belongs, was then marked by an agropastoral and forestry economy, where isolated habitats like this were common.
