Origin and history
The bridge over the Durèze is a medieval structure located in the commune of Chagnon, in the Loire department (42). Built in the early 16th century, it crosses the Durèze stream and is now reserved for pedestrians. Its modest but robust architecture reflects the construction techniques of the time, adapted to local traffic and trade needs.
Ranked as historical monuments by order of 16 December 1949, this bridge illustrates the rural heritage of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The protection specifically concerns the old structure, referred to as "bridge over the Durèze (old)". Owned by the municipality of Chagnon, it bears witness to the importance of river infrastructures in the territorial and economic organization of villages in the sixteenth century.
The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its precise location: 769 Vallée de la Durèze, in Chagnon (code Insee 42036). Although its GPS location is considered "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), no additional information specifies its current state or any restorations. Its current use remains strictly pedestrian, without mention of guided tours or tourist facilities.
