Origin and history

The fountain Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Gorvello is located at the place called Le Gorvello, in the municipality of Sulniac, in the department of Morbihan. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century, it is distinguished by its roadside architecture, composed of a pieddroit or doret accompanied by two open columns, flanked by two other isolated columns. A monolithic slab, with cornice-treated edges with denticles, supports a pediment adorned with rinsels or wingers, while cabochons decorate the corners. This monument, owned by the commune, has been listed as historical monuments since June 11, 1946.

The bell tower on a pedestal houses a statuette of Saint Vincent Ferrier, an emblematic figure of the fifteenth century, known as the Apostle of the Land of Vannes. This detail highlights the connection between the fountain and the local religious tradition, while reflecting the importance of sacred water sources in Breton devotional practices. The fountain, still in place at the impasse of the Fontaine, bears witness to the architectural art of the late Renaissance in Brittany.

The building, classified as the "Fountain of Gorvello" in the cadastre (park ZY 108), illustrates Sulniac's heritage heritage. Its designation as a historical monument in 1946 allowed its preservation, while emphasizing its role in the cultural and religious landscape of Morbihan. Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a communal good open to the visit, although its exact accessibility is not specified.
