Origin and history

The Naves Fountain, classified as a Historic Monument, is distinguished by its 14th century granite tank. Adorned with flat sculptures evoking the zodiac signs framed by twists, it bears witness to medieval artistic know-how. These symbolic motifs, typical of religious or astrological iconography of the time, suggest a function both practical and ritual in community life.

In the 18th century, a central pyramid was added, changing the original aspect of the fountain. This addition reflects the stylistic evolutions of the era, marking a transition between medieval heritage and classical influences. The inscription of the Historical Monuments in 1927 allowed its preservation, stressing its heritage importance for the commune of Naves.

Located in the department of Corrèze, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, the fountain illustrates the central role of water points in the Limousin villages. These fountains served as a gathering place, as a supply of drinking water and, sometimes, as a support for popular beliefs related to agricultural or celestial cycles. Their maintenance was often a collective responsibility, reflecting the community organisation of rural societies of the Ancien Régime.
