16th century fountain: inscription by decree of 26 April 1956
Origin and history
The Vic-le-Comte fountain, classified as a Historic Monument, dates from the 16th century and is distinguished by its Andesite architecture. It includes a circular basin with a curved edge, decorated with a Latin inscription engraved in hollow. Under this inscription, a decorative boudin highlights the base, while a central edicle, placed on a square base, supports a circular barrel topped by an oval stone container. This container, closed, is decorated with four mascarons carved in relief, through which flows water to the basin. Three prominent mouldings, also engraved with inscriptions, overlook these mascarons, adding to the ornamentation.
The ensemble, located Place du Vieux-Marché (formerly Place de la Fontaine), illustrates the know-how of Renaissance craftsmen in Auvergne. The materials used, such as landsite, a local volcanic rock, reflect the resources available in the region. The fountain, owned by the commune, was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 26 April 1956, highlighting its heritage value. Its precise location, in 27 Place du Vieux-Marché au Beurre, is considered satisfactory (note of 7/10 depending on the sources).
The mascarons, a decorative element typical of the period, served both as an ornament and as a functional system for water distribution. Their presence, combined with Latin inscriptions, suggests a desire to mark the monument with an aesthetic and symbolic dimension, possibly linked to the city's water supply or local commemoration. The lack of details on sponsors or artisans in available sources limits the understanding of its creative context.
The fountain is part of the urban landscape of Vic-le-Comte, a commune of Puy-de-Dôme in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, an area marked by a rich architectural heritage. Its state of conservation and accessibility (open to visit, although the modalities are not specified) make it a central element of the local heritage. The location data, combined with photographs licensed under Creative Commons (MOSSOT credit), allow a clear identification of the monument in its current environment.
