Origin and history
Hotel de Montauron is an iconic private hotel located at the 65th Mirabeau River in Aix-en-Provence. Built in the 17th century for the family of Montauron, it was one of the first buildings erected during the drilling of the Cours Mirabeau, then called "Courses à Carrosses". Its architecture reflects the elegance of the era, with an entrance door sculpted with shell motifs and dacanthe leaves, surmounted by an oval imposte in "beef eye" surrounded by engraved foliage.
Over the next century, the hotel changed its owners, passing into the hands of the Isoard families of Chenerilles, Blanc d'Huveaune, and Berage in 1762. These successions testify to its importance in the local aristocracy. Inside, the original wrought iron staircase and ramp add to the heritage value of the site.
The entrance gate, the only protected element, has been listed as historical monuments since 16 November 1949. This hotel thus illustrates the architectural and social evolution of Aix-en-Provence, between classical grandeur and aristocratic heritage. Its location on the Mirabeau River, the city's major artery, reinforces its status as a symbol of the Aixian heritage.
