Origin and history

The idea of a royal square and a uniform facade of the docks along the Garonne gradually emerged. In 1746, intendant Claude Boucher obtained the agreement of the jurats for the creation of the first dock. By 1729, the architect Jacques Gabriel had presented three projects, before building in 1731 the Quai de la Douane and its facades. At his death, the project was taken over by Tourny and Ange-Jacques Gabriel, son of Jacques, and in 1748 led to a unified monumental perspective.

This architectural ordinance extends the Place de la Bourse (former Place Royale) and is characterized by a arch base in the middle of the hangar, two square floors, and an attic to the Mansard pierced with skylights. The façades, although partially altered (disappearance of balconies or wrought iron supports), retain their original character thanks to their frames and larmies. Arcades, sometimes modified by the installation of shops, remain a key element of this heritage.

The building located at 45 quai Richelieu is part of this classified complex. Its façade and roof were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 14 April 1951. The initial project, led by Boucher then Tourny, aimed to harmonize Bordeaux urban planning by creating a visual unit between the city and the river, symbolizing the prestige of Bordeaux in the 18th century.
