The cellar of the 14s on cross of warheads (Box D 1051p, 1051) : inscription by decree of 3 February 1966

Origin and history

The building at 80 rue du Commerce and 3 rue du Président-Merville, in the Old Towers, houses a 14th century cellar. This rectangular cellar is arched in a low arched cross, a typical medieval architectural style. Access is done by two separate stairs, each leading to a different street, which suggests a spatial organization that is thoughtful for practical or defensive use.

The cellar was listed as historic monuments by order of 3 February 1966, thus recognizing its heritage value. Although only this part of the building is protected, it bears witness to the urban history of Tours and medieval construction techniques. The building now belongs to a private company, and its opening to the public or its current use (rent, visit) is not specified in the available sources.

The building is part of the Old Towers landscape, an area rich in architectural heritage. Its exact location, confirmed by the Merimée bases and GPS coordinates, places the building in the heart of a historical area where the traces of the Middle Ages coexist with more recent constructions. The accuracy of its location is estimated as "passible" (level 5/10), indicating an approximate geographical identification but sufficient to locate it in the city.
