Origin and history
The building at 11 Chateaubriand Street, in Saint-Malo, is a historic monument built over the 17th and 18th centuries. This building illustrates the civil architecture of this period in a major port city of Brittany, marked by its commercial and maritime dynamism. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 9 May 2023 attests to its heritage value, protecting the entire structure, including the cadastral plots AC Nos.66 and 67.
Saint-Malo, a fortified city and a port of strategic importance, experienced during the 17th and 18th centuries an economic boom linked to maritime trade, especially with the colonies. The buildings of that time, like Chateaubriand Street, often reflect the prosperity of local shipowners and merchants. Their preservation allows us to understand the urban and social evolution of the private city, between port activities, military defense and bourgeois life.
The location of the building, specified by Insee code 35288 and attached to the department of Ille-et-Vilaine, confirms its anchoring in the historic center of Saint-Malo. Although the sources do not detail its original use, its recent ranking underscores the contemporary interest in safeguarding built heritage, in an area where architecture of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is a key testimony to Breton history.
