Origin and history
The building at 16 rue Bouquerie in Avignon is a historic monument whose remarkable elements were protected by two decrees in 1977. Its interior staircase, adorned with a wrought iron ramp, as well as two lounges on the first and second floors, decorated with gypseries, were classified for their heritage value. The facades and roofs have been listed as Historic Monuments.
The location of this building, in the city centre of Avignon, reflects the typical urban planning of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although the sources do not specify its exact period of construction, its architectural style and decorative elements suggest an origin rooted in local history, probably between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The gypsies, characteristic of the bourgeois interiors of the period, and the work of wrought iron bear witness to a meticulous craftsmanship.
The 1977 Protection Order underlines the importance of preserving these interior and exterior decorations, representative of the Avignon heritage. The address mentioned in the Merimée database (16 Bouquerie Street) differs slightly from that obtained from GPS coordinates (9 Bouquerie Street), which could indicate imprecise geographical data or an extension of the building. No information is available on its current use (visit, rental, etc.).
