Origin and history
The Caen Memorial, a museum for peace, was inaugurated in June 1988 after a collection phase started in 1985. It is structured around three main axes: the Second World War, the Cold War and a reflection on contemporary peace issues. His museum journey, rich in military and historical artifacts, invites a meditation on human rights and geopolitical fragility.
The building, designed by architect Jacques Millet, Prix de Rome and Grand Prix d'Architecture, is distinguished by a stone façade of Caen and a fracture symbolizing the breach of the Atlantic Wall. Inside, spaces such as the gallery of destroyed cities or the International Park for the Liberation of Europe illustrate the consequences of conflicts. The Peace Hall, with its workshops and Nobel Prize gallery, embodies the hope for a peaceful future.
The Memorial also houses iconic elements, such as the beams of the World Trade Center, reinforcing its universal message. Ranked Musée de France, he established himself as a place of memory and education, combining ethnology, local history and industrial technique. Its official address, Esplanade Eisenhower, and its Insee code (14118) place it precisely in Calvados, in the Normandy region.
