Origin and history

The Café Brant is an emblematic establishment in the Neustadt district of Strasbourg, built in 1896 under the German Empire. He owes his name to the Strasbourg humanist Sébastien Brandt. Located in the 11th square of the University, this building was designed by Eduard Ess and architect-entrepreneur Andreas Ess, with a ground floor originally dedicated to a restaurant, as evidenced by the local archives.

Over time, the place had several vocations: transformed into a garage for cars in 1921, it then became a tea salon called Mon Plaisir in 1932, held by Madeleine Canet. In 1988, he reopened under the brand Café Brasserie Brant, before closing in 2013 for renovations. Reopened in 2014, its interior is now inspired by Viennese cafes, with woodwork, Belle Époque chandeliers and walls decorated with golden leaves. Since 2014, the building has been listed as historical monuments.

The architecture of the Brant Café reflects the German influence of the late 19th century, characteristic of the Strasburg Neustadt. Its inscription as a historic monument in 2014 protects the entire ground floor, emphasizing its heritage importance. Today, the café combines historical heritage and refined atmosphere, perpetuating its role as a place of sociability in the Alsatian capital.
