Origin and history

The Three Cross Calvary of Allègre is an emblematic religious monument located in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dated from the thirteenth century, it consists of three distinct crosses, the central one of which exhibits a rough representation of Christ, with a shroud with small, regular and symmetrical folds. At his feet, a head of death surrounded by crossed bones recalls the symbolism of death and redemption. This ordeal, located in the cemetery of the commune, was the place of reception of religious ceremonies, stressing its importance in the local spiritual life.

The central cross also presents, on its posterior face, a heart pierced with a cross and surrounded by a crown of thorns, symbol of the Passion of Christ. The crimsons, cylindrical, and the drum, of hexagonal cross section, rest on a base in the shape of a truncated pyramid with the angles fallen, bearing coats of arms now erased. The cross on the left, with its drum identical to the first, bears intersected ropes and a date erased at its base, probably 1278. The more recent cross on the right takes on the same architectural characteristics as the first.

The Three Cross Calvary was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 11 June 1930, recognizing its heritage and historical value. This monument bears witness to medieval religious art and Christian devotion in the Middle Ages, while illustrating the artistic and symbolic techniques of the time. Its state of conservation and architectural details offer a valuable insight into 13th century religious and funeral practices in Auvergne.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its local and regional importance. The Calvary is located at the approximate address of 22 Rue des Potelleries in Allègre, and remains a key part of the heritage of the municipality, managed by the municipality. Its inscription in historical monuments in 1930 preserved this unique testimony of the religious and artistic history of the Haute-Loire.
