Calvary in the public square: by order of 28 October 1941
Origin and history
The Calvary of Mavilly-Mandelot, erected in the 16th century, is a religious monument located on the public square of the village, in the department of Côte-d'Or. Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 28 October 1941, it now belongs to the commune. Its exact location, 1 Bis Place de l'Église, is documented in the Merimée base, although the accuracy of its location is considered a priori satisfactory (note 6/10).
The 16th century calvaries in Burgundy-Franche-Comté often reflect the importance of Christian devotion in the countryside at that time. These monuments, usually located in central squares or crossroads, served as spiritual and social landmarks for rural communities. Their construction coincides with a period of strengthening local religious practices, marked by sponsors often from the village elites or parish clergy.
This type of building also illustrates popular art and local Renaissance crafts, although the stylistic details specific to this calvary are not specified in the available sources.
