Origin and history
The Melrand Calvary is a historical monument located in the municipality of the same name in Brittany. Ranked in 1965, it consists of a granite ensemble, mixing elements from different periods. The base and the montage date back to 1827, while the sculpture depicting scenes of the Passion, integrated into the base, is a re-use of a Renaissance-style piece (XVIth or XVIIth century), suggesting the existence of an anterior calvary.
The Calvary rests on an altar decorated with statues of the Virgin and Saint John, added later. The barrel of the cross carries the faces of the twelve apostles in high relief, while at the top is the Lord Father, framed by two angels. This set illustrates the crucifixion of Christ, typical of Breton Calvary, and reflects the stylistic evolution between Renaissance and 19th century.
The location of the monument, at the road address of Guéméné or 7 Impasse du Calvaire, remains approximate (precision noted 5/10). Owned by the municipality, it is protected for its heritage interest, although its current accessibility is not specified in available sources.
