Origin and history

Nizon Calvary, located in Pont-Aven, Brittany, is a 15th century granite monument. Its base consists of three floors of backseats, surmounted by a Pietà. Two columns bear statues, and the whole was once placed in the heart of a cemetery today disused. This calvary, typical of Breton religious art, illustrates the know-how of the stone tailors of the time.

Ranked a Historical Monument by order of 21 February 1942, the Nizon Calvary now belongs to the commune of Pont-Aven. Its initial location in the centre of a cemetery suggests a central role in local funeral and religious practices. The Breton Calvary, often erected in the 15th and 16th centuries, served as support for popular devotion and marked sacred spaces.

Available data indicate that the ordeal is now located in or near Church Square, depending on the sources (exact address: Church Square or 1 Rue de l'Abbé Queau). Its conservation is a municipal responsibility, and its current state reflects both its seniority and efforts to preserve this heritage. The Creative Commons license associated with certain photos demonstrates its cultural and tourist interest.
