Origin and history

The Calvary of Plounerin, located on rue de l'Église in the municipality of the same name (Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany), dates mainly from the seventeenth century for its base and its base. This typical Christian monument in the area combines an ancient architectural heritage with a more recent mission cross erected in 1861. The original structure, partially classified as historical monuments in 1926, reflects the Breton religious traditions of the modern era.

The mission cross, nicknamed "the pulpit of Plounerin", was added in the 19th century by Stephanie de Quelen in memory of her husband, the Viscount Le Corgne. This part is distinguished by its openwork octagonal shape, surmounted by a cross Christ on a slender barrel. The inscription engraved on the base ("CROIX DE MISSION FOUNDED BY MADAME LA VICOMTSE LE CORGNE 1861") attests to its commemorative origin and its role in local religious missions.

The adjacent oratory, dating from the last quarter of the sixteenth century, and the carved elements (stituettes, titulus) illustrate the stylistic evolution of the monument over centuries. Although the accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (level 5/10), the Calvary remains a significant testimony of Breton religious heritage, combining devotional, memorial and architectural functions. The communal property now ensures its preservation, while stressing its anchor in local history since the modern era.
