Origin and history
Montertelot Calvary is a 16th-century religious monument located in the village of Montertelot in the Morbihan department of Britain. This carved granite calvary presents a monolithic dais cross, with a circular drum bearing the inscription O CRUX AVE on a phylacter. The ends of the cross-section are decorated with flowers, while the base has engraved inscriptions, including ADORAMUS TE CHRISTE and AVE MARIA. The side faces bear partially illegible inscriptions.
On one side, the relief decor represents a calvary with Christ between the Virgin and Saint John. The other side shows a Virgin to the Child, standing on a crescent moon, framed by two figures identified as saints or donors. Originally a road cross, this monument was moved and reassembled in the cemetery in 1886, on a 19th-century barrel and base. It has been listed as historical monuments since 30 May 1927.
The calvary illustrates Breton Christian art of the Renaissance, marked by symbolic sculptures and Latin inscriptions. Its displacement in the 19th century reflects urban developments and the desire to preserve local heritage. Today, there remains a testimony of piety and craftsmanship of the modern era in Brittany.
Owned by the municipality of Montertelot, the Calvary is located at the approximate address of 14 Rue des Forges. Its conservation status and exact location are estimated as fair (note 5/10), depending on available sources. The photographs of the monument are licensed under Creative Commons, attesting to its heritage and tourist interest.
