Origin and history

Le Calvaire Saint-Jacques de Malansac is a historic monument located in Place du Bourg, in the commune of Malansac, Brittany. Dating from the seventeenth century, it is mainly built of carved granite and includes an altar. This calvary is emblematic of Breton Christian architecture and bears witness to the importance of pilgrimage paths, especially that of Santiago de Compostela, of which Malansac was a stage.

The calvary was partially reassembled in 1807, when its pedestal was rebuilt. The cross and the lower part of the barrel would come from the old cemetery surrounding the local church. This monument was listed as historic monuments on September 25, 1928, recognizing its heritage and artistic value. It depicts religious scenes, including the Crucifixion, the Virgin to the Child, as well as figures of saints such as St Paul and St Peter.

Property of the commune of Malansac, the Calvary is located in the department of Morbihan, in Brittany. Its exact location, Bourg Square or Church Square, reflects its integration into the urban and religious fabric of the locality. Although its GPS location is approximate, its historical and cultural role remains marked, in particular in connection with the Jacquarian traditions and Breton Christian art.
