Origin and history
The Calvary Saint-Michel de Carnac is erected near the chapel of the same name, at the top of the tumulus Saint-Michel. This religious monument, dated the seventeenth century according to the sources of Monumentum, is distinguished by its coarsely carved cross, placed on an octagonal barrel. It is located in the commune of Carnac, Morbihan, Brittany.
The Calvary has been listed as historical monuments since May 12, 1925, along with the cross on the tumulus of Mont-Saint-Michel. This site is closely linked to the Saint-Michel chapel, built in 1669, and to the prehistoric tumulus on which it stands. The chapel, rectangular and arched in wood, is surmounted by a bell tower on its western gable.
The scene of Crucifixion depicted on the Calvary shows Christ surrounded by the Virgin and Saint John. Although the sculpture is considered "rawly carved", it bears witness to the local religious art of the time. The monument now belongs to the municipality of Carnac and remains an emblematic place of Breton heritage.
The tumulus Saint-Michel, on which the chapel and calvary are built, is a major archaeological site, dating from prehistoric times. This overlay of historical periods – from prehistory to the seventeenth century – illustrates the cultural and religious continuity of the site. Calvary, as a later added Christian element, symbolizes this temporal stratification.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight the heritage importance of Calvary, both for its architecture and for its inclusion in a wider historical landscape. The location of the monument, at the 8 Chemin du Tumulus in Carnac, makes it a point of interest for visitors interested in the religious and archaeological history of Brittany.
Finally, Calvary Saint-Michel, with its cross and octagonal barrel, embodies the sober style of Breton Calvary of that time. Its classification as a historic monument in 1925 strengthened its heritage value and ensured its preservation for future generations.
