Calvary (with the exception of the modern cross) (not cadastralized; public domain): inscription by decree of 17 April 1931

Origin and history

Le Calvaire de Guiscriff is a religious monument located in the village of the municipality of the same name, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. Dated from the 16th century, it embodies the Christian art of this period, marked by a strong tradition of monumental sculptures in Brittany. This type of calvary served both as a place of devotion and as a visual landmark for the faithful, often placed at the heart of parish enclosures.

The Calvary, with the exception of its modern cross, was inscribed as historical monuments by order of 17 April 1931. This protection recognizes its heritage and artistic value, although the available sources do not specify the details of its construction or any subsequent modifications. The monument remains a typical example of Breton calvaries, often associated with parish churches and local religious activities.

The municipality of Guiscriff, like many Breton localities, was in modern times organized around its parish, where the church and its calvary played a central role in community life. These monuments served as a framework for processions, prayers and gatherings, reflecting the importance of the Christian faith in the social and cultural structure of the region.
