Origin and history

This monument, typical of regional calvaries, is distinguished by its listing of historical monuments in 1945, attesting to its heritage and cultural value. Calvary, often erected from the Middle Ages until the 19th century, served as spiritual and community landmarks in villages.

That of Pontaubert, although its exact period of construction is not specified, is part of this tradition. These monuments usually marked places of assembly, prayer or crossroads, playing a central role in the religious and social life of the inhabitants. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of rural territories.
