City gate: inscription by order of 20 May 1927

Origin and history

The town gate of Camaret-sur-Aigues is a monumental gate integrated with the old city walls. It is distinguished by its imposing architecture, marked by two towers surrounding the passage, as well as by a clock and a wrought iron campanile that surmount it. This type of structure was typical of medieval fortified cities or Renaissance, serving as both a checkpoint and a symbol of prestige for the city.

The gate has been classified as historic monuments since 1927, reflecting its heritage importance. It is today the property of the commune of Camaret-sur-Aigues, in the Vaucluse department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although the sources do not specify its exact period of construction, its architectural style and inscription suggest an ancient origin, probably linked to the defensive or urban history of the region. City gates played a central role in daily life, regulating the entrances and exits of residents, merchants and travellers, while serving as a gathering or monitoring point.

The Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and especially the Vaucluse, was marked by a history rich in trade and conflict, especially during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Walls and their gates were strategic elements for cities, protecting people from invasions or looting. These structures also reflected the local social and economic organization, where access control was essential for the collection of taxes or the management of flows of people and goods. The presence of a clock on the gate of Camaret-sur-Aigues could indicate its role in the regulation of communal time, an important aspect in medieval or modern cities.
